7.5 years ago we met our Guru Shrimathi Kalamamani Kayalvizhi Kabilan. I had initially enrolled my daughter and in 6 months time, I requested, if I too can be her newbie student at an age of 35. Our Guru graciously accepted me and it has been an enriching experience in all these 7.5 years. The learning over the years on the nuances of not just dance, but talam, jathi, abhinayam, the mythological stories and slokas. Both my daughter and I have learnt to appreciate and respect the art. Not to mention the innumerable opportunities that our guru has given to us to perform at various dance stages, temples in injambakkam, mylapore, kumbakonam, papanasam, mayiladuthurai. Our Salangai Pooja practice and performance with live orchestra was memorable and turning point in our life as a dancer to learn the nuances of stage performance. All these experiences has helped us imbibe discipline, respect and focus in life. Dance is like meditation. Even during the pandemic, our online classes and learning has continued without any interruption with our Guru.
